About the Position
The Product Application Engineer is a highly visible customer-facing role with a blend of new product design engineering, and business development responsibilities.  With complex catheter market and DFM/costing knowledge, the Product Application Engineer will lead with technical expertise to drive new complex catheter product concepts into validated, commercialized product, partnering directly with business development and customers to deeply understand their application requirements and align these needs with a thorough knowledge of VitalPath’s capabilities to deliver optimal solutions.

This role involves gaining a comprehensive understanding of customer-specific needs related to performance, reliability, availability, and developing solutions to ensure customer success.  Working closely with key matrixed functions across VitalPath such as, R&D, Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance, you will own costing workflows for all opportunities.

Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include creating and presenting conceptual product design and proposals, quick turn quote facilitation, defining new custom product requirements, and managing customer expectations from initiation to product delivery.

  • Conduct customer conversations and develop products based on application and feedback received.
  • Provide critical evaluation of costs, concept performance vs customer need and competitive benchmarking.
  • Be a trusted engineering consultant in customer-facing situations.
  • Partner with R&D to produce a steady stream of technical improvements, which enable and recognize continuous product leadership.
  • Partner in collaborative setting on strategic vision(s) of focus areas, driving competitive advantage and execution.
  • Communicate status updates to senior management within the context of a structured process.
  • Research and identify market trends and needs to be used to improve VitalPath’s Pipeline of future revenue.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering field
  • 7+ years of experience in new product development or manufacturing engineering
  • Engineering, process development, or manufacturing experience in a cleanroom environment
  • Experience in writing and executing product proposals in a regulatory industry
  • Proven experience in a customer-facing role, with the ability to collaborate directly with customers to understand their medical device design needs and translate them into detailed project proposals.
  • Familiarity with FDA, ISO 13485 regulatory and validation needs in a Tier 1 complex catheter CDMO environment
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience working in product development in a regulated industry
  • Plastics/polymer molding, bonding and assembly experience
  • Background working with filtration products or single use plastics
  • Experience with medical device or bioprocessing systems components a strong plus
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements in medical device and emerging life science applications
  • Ability to effectively operate within a team composed of and lead from differing locations
